Viewing platform Ehrenbreitstein Fortress in Koblenz

History of origins

The viewing platform was designed on the occasion of the International Year of Forests as a contribution to the Federal Garden Show 2011Koblenz. Landesforsten Rheinland-Pfalz and Bundesgartenschau Koblenz 2011 GmbH jointly planned the structure, built it in close partnership and financed it in equal parts. For the duration of the Federal Horticultural Show, the building housed Landesforsten's interactive exhibition "Forest in Transition." This contribution became a visitor magnet.

The name

In 2018, several hundred name suggestions were submitted in a competition held by the city of Koblenz. The city council opted for "Rhein-Mosel-Blick," which was first suggested by Koblenz native Gerhard Josef Hermann. The large number of entries was a sign of the Koblenzers' attachment to the building.

The building

The viewing platform "floats", as it were, as an equilateral triangle with a side length of 30 meters above the edge of the slope of Ehrenbreitstein Fortress Park. It offers a panoramic view of the Rhine and the Moselle with the Deutsches Eck, the city of Koblenz and Ehrenbreitstein Fortress.During the summer months, from March to October, the wooden structure is accessible daily on two levels. In winter, the viewing platform remains closed due to the risk of slipping.

The symbolism

After the Federal Horticultural Show 2011, the viewing platform was handed over to the city of Koblenz and thus remained as a tourist highlight of Ehrenbreitstein Fortress Park. The structure exemplarily promotes the use of the renewable raw material wood as an ecological and climate-friendly building material of the 21st century.Maintenance is the responsibility of the city of Koblenz's own green spaces and burial service, which also looks after the fortress park.

The outlook

You can see the Deutsches Eck (German Corner) at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers with the monumental equestrian statue of the first German emperor, Wilhelm I, erected in 1897. To the left of it are the Deutschherrenhaus, the Basilica of St. Kastor and the cable car valley station. On the shore in the direction of Mainz, the Rhine facilities extend for 3.5 kilometers in the direction of Oberwerth and Stolzenfels.

To the left of Deutsches Eck in the direction of Bonn and Cologne, the Koblenz districts of Lützel with its camping site and Neuendorf can be seen. Further down the Rhine are Niederwerth Island and the Neuwied Basin. Straight ahead in the distance rise the low mountain ranges of Hunsrück (left of the Moselle) and Eifel (right of the Moselle).

The cable car

Hovering over 112 meters in altitude: The cable car takes you from the city's Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer up to the top station of Ehrenbreitstein Fortress every minute. The Koblenz cable car is barrier-free and can carry up to 7,600 passengers per hour.

With its 16 panoramic cabins, it promises an unforgettable ride over the Rhine and is one of the biggest attractions in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley.

The fortress park

The former firing range of Ehrenbreitstein Fortress was transformed from a wasteland into a spacious landscape park for the Federal Garden Show. Straight paths cross open meadow areas, recalling the defense of the fortress. Today, the park is a popular destination.

There is a climbing playground at the Bleidenberg plant, an information and rental station, a reading lounge, an offer for generational sports and a variety of seating areas. Colorful perennial beds and shady oak bosquets provide a nature experience.

The fortress

5,000 years of settlement, 3,000 years of fortification, 700 years of the Electorate's center of power on the Rhine and finally a Prussian fortress: For the Federal Garden Show, the state of Rhineland-Palatinate transformed Ehrenbreitstein Fortress into a modern cultural center.

Today, visitors can expect a place with exciting history, four exhibition halls of the Koblenz State Museum, culinary delights and varied cultural events. Opening hours from April to October are daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (6 p.m. - midnight usually free access to the grounds and catering), and from November to March daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
